We recently hosted journalist Stuart Faber of In Flight USA in Plano and he wrote about Mexican Sugar Cocina Y Cantina in his article calling it, “a bustling sexy cocina with congenial, knowledgeable, down-to-earth waiters and sumptuous modernized Mexican cuisine served in an atmosphere of intoxicating Latin rhythms”. If that’s not enough to spark your interest, then I guess you just have to see it to believe it for yourself.
Faber, a very intelligent and fascinating man, had his doubts on our walk to the restaurant from the Dallas/Plano Marriott at Legacy Town Center as I described it as “not your typical Tex-Mex restaurant, but contemporary Mexican food with a Latin flair”; however, one bite and he was sold.
Appetizers
Let’s begin with their socialitos, otherwise known as appetizers. Of course, us Texans love our guacamole and queso (and you should too). They have a great roasted salsa, queso blanco (white queso), and very fresh and simple guacamole. You can’t go wrong. But if you’re feeling the need to be adventurous, try the arepas; a griddled corn cake with slow-roasted barbacoa, slaw, and cilantro crema.
Entrées
Moving on to lunch and dinner options. My favorite plate is… yes, skirt steak. Don’t hate on skirt steak! Mexican Sugar does this meat right. It comes with pickled red onions, avocado, queso fresco, roasted-tomatillo salsa, black bean, hominy & quinoa salad, and corn tortillas. Delicioso! The mesquite chicken is a similar dish and is very good as well. People we’ve hosted have also enjoyed the grilled romaine and skirt steak salad, tortilla soup, both the snapper fillet and whole snapper, and carne asada tacos.
Brunch
On the weekends, we love to brunch. I just recently tried their brunch and I can say I’ll definitely be back to try more. We enjoyed the benedictos rancheros (arepa cakes, black bean purée, pork carnitas, avocado crema, over easy farm eggs, dos salsas, pico de gallo, and cilantro potato hash) and the huevos divorciados (over easy farm eggs, salsa verde, salsa roja, chili-spiced bacon, hand-pressed corn tortillas, and cilantro potato hash with a side of fresh fruit).
In true brunch fashion, they have a stellar mimosa bar. You can create your own mimosa for $5 or have a table service mimosa bar with your own bottle.
Drinks
Speaking of adult beverages, at Mexican Sugar they call them “fascinators” and “beautifiers”. Doesn’t that make you smile? Several varieties of cold tequila flow from the tap. From a classic frozen margarita to a sangria kit and everything in between, you’re sure to find your go-to beverage.
We invite you to try all of these and more at Mexican Sugar. Enjoy the food and warm atmosphere with friends and family on your next trip to Plano.
